About the Course

Hand Engraving III

Master fine shading, scroll drawing, deep relief engraving, and gold inlay accents — applied to a real object like a Zippo lighter or knife handle.

This advanced course elevates your engraving from intermediate to advanced proficiency, adding fine shading control, complex scroll and design drawing, deep relief engraving, and gold inlay applied as decorative accents on scroll flourishes — leaves and stems. The class project puts it all together on a real, functional object rather than a practice plate: a Zippo lighter or knife handle.

Class Details

Day-by-Day

  • Day 1 — Fine shading: planning and executing fine shading lines for enhanced depth and realism.

  • Day 2 — Scroll and design drawing: drawing scrolls and intricate designs for complex compositions.

  • Day 3 — Deep relief engraving: advanced relief technique for pronounced, textured backgrounds.

  • Day 4 — Gold inlay accents: inlaying gold onto scroll flourishes — leaves and stem — for luxurious detail.

  • Day 5 — Class project: execute a complete advanced project, such as a Zippo lighter or knife handle, combining shading, scrollwork, relief engraving, and gold inlay accents.

What This Class Doesn't Cover Block and script letter engraving — planned as its own standalone course. Full-design, large-scale gold inlay, overlay, and onlay work — this course applies gold inlay only as small decorative accents on scroll details, not full-surface inlay.

What You'll Leave With A completed advanced engraving project on a real object — such as a Zippo lighter or knife handle — featuring fine shading, scrollwork, a deep relief background, and gold inlay accents.
