About the Course
Hand Engraving II
Advance your skills with shading, scrollwork, relief backgrounds, and an introduction to border inlay.
Building directly on Hand Engraving I, this course refines your basic technique and adds four new skill areas: shading planning and application, scroll drawing and finishing, relief engraving for textured backgrounds, and an introduction to border inlay — a simple border or line inlaid in gold, copper, or silver around your finished design. This is an introductory treatment, not in-depth inlay work; you'll apply everything to a final pendant engraving project.

Day-by-Day
Day 1 — Refinement of basic skills: advanced technique and precision practice building on Hand Engraving I fundamentals.
Day 2 — Shading planning and application: planning shading lines and applying them for depth and realistic effect.
Day 3 — Scroll drawing and finishing: drawing scrolls with curves and flourishes, then smoothing, refining, and detailing them to a polished result.
Day 4 — Relief engraving and background applications: textured relief backgrounds, from simple textures to intricate patterns.
Day 5 — Border inlay and class project: an introduction to inlaying a border or line in gold, copper, or silver, applied together with the week's skills to a final pendant engraving project.
What This Class Doesn't Cover Block and script letter engraving — planned as its own standalone course. In-depth gold inlay work beyond a simple border or line — full-design inlay, overlay, and onlay technique belongs to a separate, more advanced course.
What You'll Leave With A finished pendant engraving project demonstrating shading, scrollwork, relief backgrounds, and a border inlaid in gold, copper, or silver.
