Jewelry Laser Welding — iWeld 992 Series

Repair and join jewelry with precision, non-contact laser welding — often without removing the stone. A 2-day weekend class.

This course teaches jewelry laser welding on the LaserStar iWeld 992 Series benchtop system. Unlike a torch, a laser welder is non-contact — it applies precise, localized heat under a microscope, which means many repairs can be done without removing heat-sensitive stones and without the firescale or oxidation cleanup a torch leaves behind. You'll learn machine operation and safety on Day 1, then apply it to real repair work on Day 2: prong rebuilding, ring sizing, and clasp repair.

Class Details

  • Duration: 2 days (Saturday & Sunday — runs as a single weekend)
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (one-hour lunch)
  • Class size: 2 students max
  • Prerequisite: Experience soldering with a torch and an understanding of jewelry repair — satisfied by completing JIA's Torch & Soldering and Jewelry Repair courses, or by equivalent outside experience
  • What's included: Tools and laser welder access provided for in-class use; materials and finished practice pieces are yours to keep

Skills You'll Gain

  • Understand how laser welding differs from torch soldering — non-contact, minimal heat damage, ability to work near stones
  • Operate the iWeld 992 safely, following Class 4 laser safety protocols and proper eye protection
  • Set appropriate power and pulse parameters for different alloys — gold, silver, platinum
  • Execute spot welding for prong repair and rebuilding, and fill welding for material buildup
  • Perform real-world repairs — prong rebuilds with stones in place, ring sizing, and clasp or chain repair

Weekend Schedule

  • Saturday — Laser welding theory and safety: how laser welding differs from torch work, Class 4 laser safety protocols and eye protection, machine components (laser source, power supply, optical system, microscope, work chamber), touchscreen and chamber joystick controls; then core welding technique: setting power and pulse parameters for gold, silver, and platinum, spot welding practice for prong repair, and fill welding for material buildup.
  • Sunday — Real repair applications and capstone: prong rebuilding with a stone in place, ring sizing, and clasp or chain repair, applied to a set of practice pieces representing real repair scenarios.

What This Class Doesn't Cover Torch soldering fundamentals (a prerequisite for this course) and gemstone setting itself — this course covers laser welding and repair technique only.

What You'll Leave With A set of practice repairs demonstrating spot and fill welding across different metals, including a prong rebuild completed with the stone in place, a resized ring, and a repaired clasp.
