Course Objectives:


Correct Setup of the Workbench:

  • Learn the essential components and layout of a properly equipped engraving workbench.

  • During extended engraving sessions, understand the importance of ergonomic setup and organization for efficient workflow and comfort.

Microscope, Pneumatic Machine, and Ball Vise Setup:

  • Gain proficiency in setting up and calibrating a microscope, pneumatic machine, and ball vise for precise engraving work.

  • Understand the functions and adjustments of each equipment component to optimize engraving performance.

Graver Sharpening and Cutting Geometry:

  • Master the art of sharpening gravers to achieve razor-sharp cutting edges.

  • Learn the correct geometry and angle for engraving cuts, ensuring clean and precise line work.

Artwork Layout and Design Transfer:

  • Explore techniques for transferring designs onto engraving surfaces, including mild steel and bronze plates.

  • Develop skills in layout and composition to plan and execute engraving projects with clarity and accuracy.

Line Cutting Techniques:

  • Practice line-cutting techniques, including straight lines, curves, and intricate patterns.

  • Learn which graver each line and curve uses to achieve the desired cut.

  • Learn to control engraving depth and pressure to create dynamic and expressive line work.

Work-Holding Fixtures and Devices:

  • Understand the proper use of work-holding fixtures and devices to secure engraving surfaces during work.

  • Explore different holding methods and their applications for stability and precision in engraving.

Shading Techniques and Background Treatments:

  • Discover shading techniques to add depth and dimension to engraved designs, enhancing visual impact.

  • Learn how to create background treatments to accentuate focal points and create contrast within compositions.

Block and Script Letter Engraving:

  • Develop proficiency in engraving block and script letterforms with clarity and consistency.
