About the Course

Immerse yourself in a five-day workshop to equip you with the essential skills and techniques needed for a proficient gemstone & micro-pave setting. This comprehensive workshop will elevate your diamond-setting expertise to new heights, from mastering micromotor handpiece machines to honing your metal-cutting abilities.

You will not set any gemstones in the class, but the instructor will demonstrate a few settings on the last day.

Class Details:

Duration: 5 days (Monday to Friday)

Time: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (one hour lunch)

Class Size: Limited to 6 students for focused instruction and individual attention.

Prerequisites: While prior jewelry-making experience is beneficial, this workshop is open to beginners with a passion for learning.

Class Objective

Bench and Equipment Setup:

  • Learn how to properly set up your bench and equipment, including a microscope and pneumatic engraving machine, for efficient and comfortable working conditions.

  • Understand the importance of ergonomics and organization in optimizing workflow and productivity.

  • Introduction to Micromotor Handpiece Machine

  • Understanding the components and functions of the micromotor handpiece machine.

  • Safety protocols and best practices for operating the equipment.

  • Hands-on practice session with different drill bits to familiarize students with their applications.

Drilling:

  • Drilling and Ball Burring Techniques

  • What is the right speed to drill and carve with?

  • Mastering the correct angle and pressure for drilling gemstone seats.

  • Techniques for preventing shattering and achieving precise cuts.

  • Selecting the appropriate drill bits for efficient and effective drilling.

Cutting:

  • Metal Cutting with Various Burs

  • Exploring the versatility of different burs for metal cutting and shaping.

  • Practical exercises to develop proficiency in channel cutting and precise metal shaping.

  • Tips for achieving clean and accurate cuts to enhance gemstone setting.

Sharpening:

  • Sharpening and Cutting with Gravers

  • Introduction to graver shapes and their applications in bright-cut techniques.

  • Hands-on practice sessions covering primary line, circle, and corning cutting.

  • Techniques for creating decorative borders and embellishments using gravers.

Applied Techniques:

  • Project Work and Final Showcase

  • Applying learned techniques to a final project incorporating gemstone setting and micropave design.
